Lanzarote to Antigua: an unsupported journey

The Deep Notes 2028 is an unsupported ocean row across the Atlantic — from Lanzarote to Antigua — an incredible challenge which is attempting to raise funds and awareness for two incredible charities – Refuge & My Hospitals Charity.

Setting off from Marina Rubicón in Lanzarote, Suzie and Mandy will attempt a mainland-to-island unsupported crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, something few have ever completed.

Starting from Lanzarote, the crew will row around 3,200 nautical miles to Antigua in the Caribbean. This is an incredibly challenging event which will push even experienced ocean rowers to their limits.

Unsupported means just that: no stopping for rest, no calling for specialist help with repairs, no popping ashore for medical attention, and no calling for a lift if things get too much.

Although the crew will have access to a satellite tracker to send updates, they — and they alone — will be the ones who have to handle any problems that arise. Whatever the ocean throws at them, they must solve it themselves: 2 hours rowing, 2 hours resting, around the clock, every single day.

Everything they need will be loaded onto the boat before they leave, and once they've departed there is no turning back. Over 40 to 80 days at sea they will need up to 6,000 calories a day, rely on solar desalination for 3–5 litres of fresh water, and shelter only in a tiny watertight cabin barely larger than a small double bed.

Meet The Crew

Mandy Hadley

Mandy Hadley

The Skipper

Mandy is a dedicated mum, animal lover, choir singer and investment professional who believes anyone can achieve extraordinary things when they decide to try. As a single parent who has raised two children while building a successful career in technology-focused investment and commercial growth, she knows first-hand the strength that comes from resilience, determination and choosing to keep moving forward even when life feels demanding. Her love of horses has been one of the most defining influences in her life. Mandy owned her horse, Saria, for 31 years, embracing natural horsemanship after a chance meeting Monty Roberts in 1988, Saria was just three. The partnership that was then built with her horse taught her profound lessons about communication, empathy trust and psychological connection. These are the lessons that have shaped the way she approaches people, challenge and uncertainty. Preparing for this row is not about considering herself exceptional, it's about discovering what becomes possible when you commit to something bold, embrace uncertainty and trust that growth happens outside your comfort zone. Courage is not the absence of fear, it's the decision to act anyway with determination to keep going even when it gets tough, all demonstrated daily by Refuge, Mandy's charity focus for this crossing. Mandy understands the importance of safety, independence and support for women and children who are rebuilding their lives. Away from training, Mandy's world revolves around her two children: a daughter who plays high-level football and a son studying Motorsport Engineering. An animal lover, owner of two dogs and a tortoise, when she's not working or training, you'll often find her singing with her choir, where she finds joy, connection and a sense of community. Through this adventure, Mandy hopes to show that remarkable achievements are possible for anyone who decides to take the first step, then the next and the next.

Suzie Hackman

Suzie Hackman

The Navigator

Suzie is an NHS professional, mum, sea lover and singer who believes that growth happens when we challenge ourselves to step beyond what's comfortable. As one half of The Deep Notes, she is preparing to row the Atlantic Ocean not because she considers herself extraordinary, but because she wants to discover what is possible when we push beyond our own expectations. For Suzie, courage is not about being fearless. It's about choosing to take on something difficult, embracing uncertainty and finding a sense of achievement through the journey. Working in the NHS, Suzie sees first-hand the incredible strength, compassion and dedication shown by healthcare staff every day. Their commitment to caring for others, often under immense pressure, has inspired her to support My Hospitals Charity as part of this challenge. She believes the NHS touches almost every life and that the people behind it deserve recognition for the difference they make. Through this adventure, Suzie hopes to show that remarkable achievements are not reserved for elite athletes or exceptional individuals. They are possible for everyday people willing to take the first step, keep going when things get hard and believe they are capable of more than they imagine. When she's not training for life at sea, you'll usually find her singing, spending time on the coast or enjoying adventures with family and friends.
